Group Counseling
Group counseling provides children and teens with the opportunity to connect with peers who may be experiencing similar challenges. Group sessions create a supportive environment where youth can practice communication, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and social skills while building confidence and healthy relationships.
Many children and teens benefit from knowing they are not alone in what they are experiencing. Group counseling can help youth feel understood, supported, and encouraged by peers in a structured and therapeutic setting.
Groups are organized by age and developmental stage to ensure children are placed in a setting that is appropriate for their emotional, social, and cognitive needs.
Current group age ranges include:
-
Grades 3–5 (approximately ages 8–11)
-
Grades 6–8 (approximately ages 11–14)
-
Grades 9-12 (Weekend Intensives ages 14-17)
Younger groups are designed to include more movement, games, hands-on activities, and shorter lessons to help maintain attention and engagement. Older groups allow for more discussion, reflection, problem-solving, and exploration of more abstract concepts.
Group sessions are typically held weekly and generally last between 60 and 80 minutes, depending on the age and developmental level of the group. Most group programs are designed as a closed series lasting 5 to 8 weeks or 5 days, which allows children and teens enough time to build trust, learn new skills, and practice them consistently over time.
A typical group session may include:
-
Opening routine, check-in, and review
-
A core skill-building activity, lesson, or therapeutic game
-
Reflection, discussion, and closing activities
Group counseling may focus on topics such as:
-
Stress management
-
Behavioral challenges and school concerns
-
Emotional regulation
-
Social skills
-
Self-esteem and confidence
-
Family changes
-
Peer relationships
-
Bullying
-

-
Coping stratagies
-

Groups are typically limited to 6–10 participants to help ensure each child has an opportunity to participate, build relationships, and receive support in a safe and structured environment.
